Introduction:
Travel is a common favourite among most people, but for LGBT+ individuals, the choice of destination can significantly impact their experience. Knowing which countries offer a welcoming and inclusive environment is crucial for a safe and enjoyable trip. Though I know many travellers don’t have time to read about the dangers of the places they are visiting, so why not focus on the positive? In this blog, we’ll explore the top five LGBT+ friendly countries worldwide, highlighting their progressive attitudes, legal protections, and vibrant cultural scenes.
P.s. While this LGBT+ travel guide provides valuable insights, remember that your travel decisions should always prioritize personal safety and comfort. Now, let’s dive into these incredible LGBT+ friendly destinations, starting with the pioneering Netherlands 🙂
1 – Netherlands
With the Netherlands being the first country to legalise same sex marriage in the year 2001 and among the first to decriminalise homosexual acts in the early 1800s, this country is by far the most progressive nation worldwide. Whilst discriminatory attitudes are still present, it should be noted that these are within the minority and are by no means a reflection of the majority attitude towards the community, as shown by Amsterdam’s Pride event which never fails to impress.
Furthermore, the Netherlands is home to many LGBT+ foundations, such as COC Netherlands, which was founded in 1946, and is the oldest LGBT+ organisation worldwide. This foundation actively combats homophobia, ensuring that everyone in the community can feel safe and supported. However, please stay safe and stray away from individuals or groups that seem less welcoming; an organisation can only provide so much support. It’s important to do our part in avoiding these encounters where possible.
2 – Canada
Next is Canada, whilst this nation is renowned for its cold and unforgiving weather, it’s pleasant to hear this nation’s attitudes towards the LGBT+ community are quite the contrary. Canadians are well-known for their values of acceptance and inclusivity whether to someone of the LGBT+ community or a stranger, you may have heard a comedian or two even mention this politeness as Canadians are known for being amongst the politest people. Not sure about you, but that fills me with a lot of confidence, and we haven’t even considered the vast amount of support available.
For example, like the other countries further down this list, Canada was pre-emptive in legalising same sex marriage and followed in the Netherland’s footsteps only 4 years later with strong anti-discrimination legislation of which is the most encompassing when compared to other countries. As such, LGBT+ travellers can find haven in knowing they are surrounded by a welcoming space full of allies.
3 – Sweden
Sweden stands out as a beacon of inclusivity and support for the LGBT+ community with its progressive laws, welcoming society, and extensive support systems. Sweden’s legalisation of same-sex marriage was passed in 2009 and the country provides robust healthcare services, including gender-affirming treatments and surgeries covered by national health insurance, demonstrating itself as a safe place for members of the community living or those wanting to travel there.
Cities like Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö have vibrant LGBT+ scenes, featuring numerous bars, clubs, and cultural events, which provide a great space for LGBT+ travellers to meet local members of the community, and possibly make a new forever friend. Sweden also has the benefit of a beautiful natural landscape, and so if you’re a nature nerd like me, Sweden’s acceptance makes it all the more a reason to visit for a quick getaway, but I can’t promise you won’t end up staying longer. Sweden has plenty to explore and is towards the top of many travellers’ bucket lists.
4 – Spain
For those who love history and culture, Spain also makes the list. Major Spanish cities like Barcelona and Madrid are home to large LGBT+ communities, with Madrid’s Pride festival, being one of the largest and most celebrated in the world. Spain’s international commitment to celebrating diversity and promoting equality can be seen through the participation of many Spanish embassies at Pride events, and their vocality on LGBT+ rights.
For any LGBT+ language enthusiasts, Spain is a must-attend, as the language can be mastered relatively quickly by English speakers with it being a category 1 language as per the Foreign Service Institute’s difficulty ranking system, and from experience most Spaniards are more than happy to talk to you in their language. However, if you’re not as much of a language enthusiast and are simply looking for a getaway, I’d recommend Barcelona over Madrid, as Barcelona tends to be more English speaking due to the higher amount of tourism, and shares the accepting attitudes towards LGBT+ travellers seen in Madrid. Maybe muster up the courage for Madrid Pride though. Remember learning a few Spanish phrases can take you a long way in Spain!!
5 – Germany
And… Germany!! Known for its amazing sausages and sauerbraten, Germany’s progressive stance on LGBT+ rights is reflected in its comprehensive legal protections, and robust anti-discrimination laws, despite the legalization of same-sex marriage only being passed in 2017. Germany still manages to ensure that LGBT+ travellers feel safe and respected throughout their visit.
And more!! Berlin, the capital, boasts a vibrant LGBT+ scene, and the renowned Christopher Street Day (CSD) parade, one of Europe’s largest Pride celebrations. Cities like Hamburg, Cologne, and Munich offer thriving LGBT+ communities with their own Pride events and cultural festivals, though not as large as Madrid in many cases, these are great events to meet new people, or simply just to have an amazing time in a known safe environment.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the world is gradually becoming a more inclusive and welcoming place for LGBT+ travellers, and countries like the Netherlands, Canada, Sweden, Spain, and Germany stand out as beacons of acceptance and support.
These nations not only offer comprehensive legal protections and robust anti-discrimination laws but also boast vibrant cultural scenes and active LGBT+ communities. From Amsterdam’s impressive Pride events to the polite and inclusive society of Canada, the natural beauty and vibrant nightlife of Sweden, the rich culture and language opportunities in Spain, and Germany’s robust legal framework and lively cities, each of these destinations provides a safe and enriching travel experience. While it’s essential to remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings, these countries are promised to offer LGBT+ travellers a sense of belonging and adventure.
